Kim Jong Un calls for increasing his country’s nuclear arsenal for use at any time

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called on Tuesday to increase his country’s nuclear arsenal, saying it should be fully prepared to use it at any time, according to North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, as a US aircraft carrier approaches South Korea.

This comes after the South Korean army announced that Pyongyang fired two ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast on Monday.

The South Korean military also condemned the launch, describing it as a “dangerous provocation” that violates United Nations Security Council resolutions, and called for an immediate halt to such operations.

For its part, the Japanese government also lodged “strong representations” with North Korea, saying its missile launches threaten the safety and security of Japan, the region and the international community.

The US aircraft carrier Nimitz and its accompanying ships will dock at a South Korean naval base in the southeast of the country.

The South Korean Defense Ministry said the planned visit of the aircraft carrier was arranged as part of efforts to deploy more US “strategic military assets” in the region to deter North Korea.

North Korea has stepped up its military tests in recent weeks, including firing several cruise missiles last Wednesday, in a test Pyongyang said was intended to train for tactical nuclear attacks.
